GUIDE OBSERVATION

Assessment

The ISKGA Guide Observation is a three-step process where trainee guides will showcase their skills and present the knowledge they have developed under the guidance of a trainer or mentor. The process is threefold. Firstly, the trainee guides will receive a trainer’s recommendation and complete a diagnostic paper to assess and self-diagnose their readiness to proceed with the process.

Secondly, they will prepare a group of paddlers for a multi-day expedition that aligns with the remit of the award they are applying for, and liaise with their observer, who will be overseeing the observation.

Thirdly, they will receive feedback from their observer, who has observed them throughout the two- to three-day process.

There are four possible outcomes from the observation process:

Deferral: In this instance, it is determined that the applicant requires further training in areas considered to be ‘core’ elements of the guide’s resume.
Deferred Pass: In this case, a ‘Trainer’s Action’ is created, which needs to be completed under their trainer with video evidence submitted to the observer prior to the award being completed.
Pass: The candidate has achieved a satisfactory pass in all areas of the guide program.
Distinction: This is an above-average pass where the candidate excelled in all areas of the observation process.
