FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS 3

Expedition Team Member Module

The Fundamental Level 3 course advances sea kayaking skills, focusing on controlling kayaks in more challenging conditions of wind, wave and tide as well as enhancing sea safety, navigation and camp craft. Paddlers will refine techniques learnt from Levels 1 and 2, becoming proficient in kayak handling, seamanship, rescue & recovery, camp craft, and navigation.

Techniques in dynamic environments are greater embedded, like dynamic edging, leaning, bracing and recoveries.

The course content includes environmental considerations such as surf zones, tidal flow, and wind effects. Sea safety focuses on personal and group rescue strategies, and rescue equipment training, such as the use of throw lines and slings.

Camp craft skills include constructing emergency shelters, fire lighting, and water sourcing/treatment. Navigation training covers time and distance calculations, aiming off for wind and tide, and understanding the rule of thirds and the 50/90 rule.
