ICELAND KAYAK EXPEDITIONS

“Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread.`` - Edward Abbey

Iceland, situated on the Mid Atlantic Ridge is a land of constant change. It is the most sparsely populated country in Europe and one of the last true wildernesses.

We will explore the West Fjords camping from our kayaks. Due to the changeable weather we have a boat shuttle on standby to help us access more remote areas that are rarely kayaked. The area is situated very close to the Arctic circle and is blessed with 24hours of light during the summer.

We will be there during the summer solstice and so we will have the opportunity to experience this magical occurrence. You will get the chance to see abundant wildlife and dramatic scenery as well as sample some of the traditional Icelandic foods. We are really excited to be offering this unique expedition and hope you can join us for an adventure of a lifetime.

Expedition Details

To get the most out of the expedition you should be around BCU 3 star sea kayak ability or be comfortable in conditions associated with force 4 winds. This is the SKC orange level as a minimum.  If you have any questions regarding the required ability please feel free to get in touch.

The area is very remote and wild and so being comfortable camping in the wild is essential.

Even though we will be there in midsummer it is still likely to be cold water paddling and so you will need to be prepared for this.

Timings

We recommend arriving the day before the expedition is due to start to allow for transport delays. There are many b&b`s and a campsite in the town. There are direct flights from the domestic airport in the capital with Iceland air to Isafjordur.

We will meet up at 9 am on the first day of the expedition in Isafjordur to go through a plan and aim to get on the water around midday.

We will spend the morning getting supplies and packing the kayaks.

We will then either paddle out of Isafjordur or get dropped off by boat or van depending on the forecast.

We will be back at Isafjordur on the 19th ready to fly out on the 20th of June on the morning flight. This gives us 8 days out away from civilisation, however we may not be able to paddle every day due to the nature of the environment.

 What to bring

  • Camping equipment
  • Sleeping Mat and bag

It is a good idea to bring some good footwear as on windy days it will be possible to go for a hike which is highly recommended.  You will need 8 evening meals, 8 breakfasts and 8 lunches.  There will be the opportunity to fish so bring a hand line to help supplement your food!  We will have a few to pass around.

Water temperature will be around 6-8 degrees and so Poggies and gloves will be useful.  Also a jacket that will fit over your b-aid to help you regulate temperature on the water will be useful.  Please be aware the weather in the West Fjords is very unpredictable and can be +20 or 0 degC at this time of year.  Let’s hope for the +20`s and pack some shorts.

Most people paddle in dry suits with either thin or thick thermals depending on the day. Paddling trousers with a dry top is also suitable if you prefer and have a roll.

Swimming costumes are optional but a quick dip in the evenings is highly recommended!
